The Election Commission of India has announced that biennial elections for nine seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) are scheduled for May 12. This is due to the imminent conclusion of the tenure for nine MLCs by May 13, 2026. The seats, currently held by figures including Sanjay Kishanrao Kenekar and Uddhav Thackeray, require fresh elections to ensure continued representation.
The Commission specifies that official notification of these elections will be issued on April 23. Candidates have until April 30 to file nominations, followed by a scrutiny process on May 2. Candidates can withdraw their candidature until May 4. Should polling be necessary, it will occur from 9 am to 4 pm on the scheduled date, with vote counting commencing at 5 pm.
Importantly, of Maharashtra's 78 MLCs, certain positions are filled by an electoral college consisting of Members of the Legislative Assembly. As such, these nine upcoming council seats will be determined by the votes of the state's 288 MLAs, underscoring the significant role of the assembly in shaping the council's composition.
