Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has celebrated the enactment of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, calling it a groundbreaking reform aimed at bolstering women's involvement in governance and reinforcing democratic institutions. Speaking to ANI, Yadav highlighted the legislation as a testament to the Government of India's commitment to women-led progress and inclusive growth.
Yadav underscored the significance of the Act in guaranteeing greater representation for women within legislative bodies, thus enabling them to play a pivotal role in policymaking and national advancement. "The Nari Shakti Vandan Act is indeed a monumental decision for our sisters and democracy," he stated, emphasizing the wide-reaching benefits for half of the population and the parliamentary ecosystem.
The Chief Minister pointed out how the increased participation of women in politics could herald more balanced and people-focused decision-making. He affirmed that empowering women across all societal tiers remains a top priority for both central and state governments. Moreover, the legislation is anticipated to foster social transformations by inspiring women, particularly those from rural and marginalized backgrounds, to assume leadership roles.
Despite the government's plan to implement the women's reservation by the 2029 General Elections through amendments, opposition parties have expressed their reservations regarding the proposed delimitation bill. The bill, offering 33% reservation for women legislators, is scheduled to coincide with the delimitation process, prompting concerns about the reduced representation of southern states in the Lok Sabha and the perceived haste in passing it before a nationwide census.
The impending legislative changes include increasing the number of seats in the Lok Sabha to 850 by amending the 2023 Act and constitutional provisions, with the Centre convening a special parliamentary session from April 16 to 18. While an approximate 50% increase in seats is planned, the opposition has voiced concerns over the uneven distribution relative to individual states, linked to constituency population metrics as stipulated by Article 82 of the Constitution.
