Nearly 900 Rohingya refugees were reported missing or dead in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal in 2025, according to the United Nations refugee agency, marking the deadliest year on record for this perilous route.
UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch announced in Geneva that more than one in seven of the estimated 6,500 Rohingya refugees who attempted the treacherous sea crossings last year are now unaccounted for or confirmed dead.
This high mortality rate underscores the severe risks faced by refugees and migrants worldwide, particularly those fleeing from the dire conditions that compel them to seek new beginnings, even at the peril of their lives.
