In a bold move aligning with Supreme Court recommendations, Himachal Pradesh is pioneering legislative action to curb political defections. Speaker of the Assembly, Kuldeep Singh Pathania, emphasized the state's role at the forefront of anti-defection law enhancements, noting a recent amendment that denies pension benefits to disqualified MLAs.

Speaking at the end of the budget session, Pathania outlined the new measures targeting defectors who, after losing their seats, will lose future post-retirement perks unless re-elected. He pointed to the successful passage of earlier legislation preventing defectors from contesting elections for six years, currently under judicial review.

The session was marked by high productivity, with 94 issues addressed during Zero Hour and over 90 hours in proceedings. Pathania expressed satisfaction at such engagement, crediting the successful collaboration among all state legislative members and the media, further promising continued transparency and accountability.
