The Election Commission (EC) of India faces significant challenges in West Bengal, as they attempt to prepare for the upcoming election phases. With less than a week to resolve voter eligibility disputes, the commission must establish special tribunals to handle these cases efficiently.
However, the process is encountering roadblocks. Shortages in infrastructure and exemptions sought by retired judges are delaying tribunal operations. This delay could hinder the resolution of approximately 13 lakh voter eligibility cases, impacting voters' ability to participate in the forthcoming elections.
In an effort to expedite the process, the EC aims to set up the tribunals at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Institute's Diamond Harbour Road office. Collaborating with retired Calcutta High Court judges, the commission remains optimistic, even as logistical challenges remain a concern ahead of the election deadlines.
