Leadership Shift in Mexican Foreign Ministry Amidst USMCA Review

Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente is set to vacate his role due to health concerns, according to local reports on Wednesday. His departure paves the way for Roberto Velasco, head of the North America department at the foreign ministry, to assume the position.

De la Fuente, who has been on medical leave since last November for surgery, leaves his post at a crucial juncture for regional trade. The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is currently under joint review by its member nations.

Negotiated during the Trump administration to replace NAFTA in 2020, the USMCA is integral to the Mexican economy. The Mexican foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment on whether De la Fuente's departure is permanent. Reuters could not immediately verify the reports.
