In a historic move, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is fielding two women candidates for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections on April 9. This initiative, amid a list of 25 candidates, marks the first time the party has nominated multiple women in a single election cycle.
The candidates, Fathima Thahiliya and Jayanthi Rajan, reflect IUML's effort to prioritize fresh faces and youth, according to IUML General Secretary PMA Salam. Despite their nomination, discontent simmers within the Women League, with some members expressing concerns about being sidelined.
Experts like political analyst G Gopakumar laud the decision as a progressive stride for a party traditionally dominated by men. The move is seen as a significant step in diversifying political representation in the state, further underlining IUML's evolving approach in engaging with minority and broader communities alike.
