India Addresses LPG Concerns amid West Asia Conflict

With the West Asia conflict casting a shadow over energy supplies, India's government reassured citizens of adequate crude oil availability while expressing concerns over LPG shortages. At an inter-ministerial briefing, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, affirmed that Indian refineries are operating optimally. However, she acknowledged persistent issues with LPG distribution, citing long lines at distributors despite increased online booking and a 40 percent rise in domestic production.

Amid these challenges, the government has laid out measures to promote Piped Natural Gas (PNG), speeding up efforts to expand city gas infrastructure nationwide. This initiative targets reducing reliance on LPG, with authorities encouraging consumers, particularly in urban areas, to transition to PNG. In addition, the Centre has reached out to state governments to facilitate rapid approvals for critical infrastructure projects while various city gas distribution entities roll out incentives to boost PNG uptake.

To further alleviate pressure on LPG resources, alternate fuels like kerosene and coal are being employed in crucial sectors, including hospitality. The Ministry of Petroleum has assured ample stocks of aviation turbine fuel and noted that oil companies have maintained current pricing, urging citizens to avoid panic buying.
