Opposition MLAs in Goa, drawn from Congress, AAP, and the Revolutionary Goans Party, have convened with Governor P Ashok Gajapathi Raju to express their disapproval of the budget session's curtailment. The truncated session has sparked allegations of the government's attempt to sidestep accountability measures.
The budget session was shortened due to the Model Code of Conduct's enforcement triggered by the forthcoming bypoll in the Ponda assembly constituency. Opposition leaders argue that the move denies Goans their constitutional right to government accountability, pointing out that assemblies continue in other states despite byelections.
The opposition demands the assembly be reconvened under Article 175 and threatens further action, including approaching President Droupadi Murmu, if their demands remain unmet. Meanwhile, concerns persist about the government's motives, with accusations of avoiding the passage of key bills intended to protect local interests.
