In a significant move, the Lok Sabha has extended the tenure of the parliamentary committee reviewing the Bills aimed at introducing simultaneous polls for the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies until the 2026 monsoon session.
The extension, moved by P P Chaudhary, chairman of the Joint Committee of Parliament, allows additional time for comprehensive examination and consultation with experts in various fields.
Since its establishment, the committee has engaged with constitutional experts, economists, members of the Law Commission, and renowned politicians. Notable figures like IMF's former deputy managing director Gita Gopinath and former chief justices of India have also contributed to the discussions.
