Tanzania's Controversial Election: A One-Sided Race?
Tanzania's recent election saw President Samia Suluhu Hassan expected to win, as key opposition candidates were barred. Small protests and internet disruptions marked the event. The government denies claims of electoral misconduct and rights abuses, while results are expected within three days.
Tanzanians cast their votes on Wednesday in an election widely expected to see President Samia Suluhu Hassan retain power. This follows the barring of candidates from the leading opposition parties, leading to protests dispersed by police in Dar es Salaam.
Despite accusations of treason against opposition leader Tundu Lissu and the disqualification of prominent candidates, the government maintains the election's fairness, denying claims of misconduct and rights abuses, even as internet disruptions occurred nationwide.
Hassan urges citizens to participate in the democratic process while continuing her campaign to improve the nation's infrastructure. Results from the election, involving parliament and Zanzibar's semi-autonomous government, are expected within three days.
