Tensions Rise: China Reaffirms Force Option for Taiwan
China has reaffirmed it will not rule out the use of force to reunify Taiwan, marking a stark tone amid recent state media propositions for peaceful integration. Taiwan continues to reject Beijing's sovereignty claims, likening China's current model to those seen in Hong Kong and Macau.
In a firm declaration, China has stated it will not preclude the use of force to achieve reunification with Taiwan, challenging the more conciliatory state media messaging seen earlier this week. A government spokesperson emphasized this stance during a Wednesday news conference.
Despite Chinese assurances of a peaceful integration under a 'one country, two systems' model, Taiwan remains steadfast in resisting such advances. Taiwan's leadership has reaffirmed their resolve against any form of annexation, which Beijing has yet to address directly in its high-level policy speeches.
The issue gains further complexity as impending talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping loom, though it's unclear if Taiwan will be a focal point. Taiwan continues to draw parallels to Hong Kong's situation as it maintains its stance on sovereignty and democracy.
