Prashant Kishor, a key figure in India's political landscape, finds himself at the center of an electoral controversy. Officials revealed that Kishor, who spearheads the Jan Suraaj Party, appears on the voter rolls in both Bihar and West Bengal, raising legal and ethical questions.
His registration in West Bengal's Bhabanipur constituency, where Mamata Banerjee of the TMC runs, contrasts with his Bihar voter registry under the Sasaram parliamentary constituency. This dual registration violates Section 17 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, which prohibits voters from being listed in more than one constituency.
The Election Commission has noted the issue of duplicate voter entries, which prompted a comprehensive revision of electoral rolls. This nationwide effort resulted in the removal of approximately 68.66 lakh entries, addressing a persistent challenge in the country's electoral system.
