The ongoing investigation into alleged 'vote chori' or vote theft in Karnataka's Aland assembly segment during the 2023 elections has unveiled concerning findings. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has identified attempts to delete legitimate names from the voters' list, implicating several individuals in the process.
Sources within the Criminal Investigation Department reveal that the suspects were compensated Rs 80 for each successfully deleted voter name. An attempt was made to erase 6,994 names, largely deemed bogus aside from a few genuine cases. The region, notable for being the home district of Congress dignitaries like President Mallikarjun Kharge, saw efforts by his son and local MLA Priyank Kharge to expose the scam.
The Karnataka government's establishment of the SIT, led by Additional Director General of Police B K Singh, has scrutinized around 30 individuals, narrowing down to six prime suspects linked to a data centre. This controversy hints at potential broader implications, with SIT carrying out pertinent raids and drawing connections to BJP associates, adding a political dimension to this electoral malpractice.
