Delhi's Cutting-Edge Solution for Yamuna: In-Situ Drain Cleaning
The Delhi government plans to clean major drains using modern technology to restore the Yamuna River. They aim to implement in-situ cleaning technology as a short-term measure while developing sewage treatment plants for long-term solutions. The pilot project will begin at the Defence Colony drain.

The Delhi government is set to embark on an ambitious project using modern technology to clean major drains across the capital. This initiative, announced by Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, aims to rejuvenate the Yamuna River, which has been a focal point for multiple policy efforts.
A 45-point action plan by the Delhi Jal Board last year highlighted the need for in-situ technology to improve water quality. The plan involves deploying IIT-Roorkee for a pilot in-situ cleaning project at Defence Colony drain, utilizing nano technology to treat water directly in the drains without diverting it.
This interim solution, pending the construction of more extensive sewage treatment plants, aims to address space limitations by establishing decentralized sewage treatment plants. The government has already approved several DSTPs and plans to add more to curtail sewage flowing into the Yamuna.
