Delhi's Bold Plan: Heatwave Deaths to Zero by 2030

In a bold initiative, the Delhi government has set a target to eliminate heatwave-related deaths by 2030, announced Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday. In a high-level meeting, Gupta assessed the preparedness under the 2026 heatwave action plan, directing departments to enhance measures across all levels.

Gupta emphasized modifying construction workers' hours, providing shade and drinking water, and introducing a 'water bell' system in schools. The health sector sees over 339 centers equipped with ORS packets, while more than 30 hospitals have 'cool rooms' for heatstroke management.

The action plan, coordinated by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, involves multiple departments and over 17 partners, including NGOs. With recent temperatures reaching 43.7°C, field interventions include cooling points and a citywide awareness campaign. Efforts extend to adequate provisions for animals and birds.
