A court in Assam's Nagaon district delivered a verdict on Friday, sentencing 20 individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in the lynching of two people in Karbi Anglong. The decision comes eight years after the horrific incident stirred the nation.
The District Sessions Judge, D J Mahanta, not only sentenced them to life behind bars but also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each convict. This decisive ruling follows the conviction delivered earlier in the week, where 20 of the 45 accused were found guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Originally, a total of 48 people faced arrest. Among them, three were identified as minors and are currently being lodged in the Jorhat Juvenile Home. The 2018 lynching was driven by suspicion that the victims were child lifters, sparking widespread outrage and calls for justice.
