Tensions Rise as Israeli Strikes Hit Lebanon Amid Ceasefire Talks
An Israeli strike in southern Lebanon killed two people, heightening tensions ahead of ceasefire talks between Lebanon and Israel. Hezbollah retaliated with a drone attack on Israeli forces, violating the U.S.-mediated ceasefire. Talks aim to extend the ceasefire and address territorial issues and prisoner returns.
An Israeli strike in southern Lebanon on Wednesday resulted in two fatalities, according to Lebanon's state news agency. The attack took place ahead of anticipated Washington talks between Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors. In response, Hezbollah launched a drone at Israeli forces, escalating tensions around a U.S.-mediated ceasefire set to expire on Sunday.
The Lebanese government, backed by President Joseph Aoun's efforts, is pushing for an extension of the ceasefire and calls for the cessation of Israeli demolitions in southern villages. A key demand in forthcoming negotiations includes Israel's withdrawal from occupied territories and the return of detained Lebanese citizens.
The conflict, which flared up on March 2 with a Hezbollah attack, has claimed over 2,400 lives in Lebanon. As both sides prepare for high-level talks involving U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the focus remains on transitioning towards a lasting peace agreement.
