Tensions Rise as French Soldier Dies in Lebanon Attack Linked to Hezbollah
President Emmanuel Macron announced the death of a second French soldier following a Hezbollah-linked attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon. The incident, which left Chief Corporal Anicet Girardin dead, has sparked international tensions. Lebanon's investigation into the attack aims to identify those responsible.
A second French soldier has succumbed to injuries sustained during a recent attack on United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon, President Emmanuel Macron explained on Wednesday. The soldier, Chief Corporal Anicet Girardin, had been critically wounded on April 18 in what was later identified as an assault by Iran-backed Hezbollah militants.
UN peacekeeping forces were targeted while performing road-clearing operations in southern Lebanon. The mission suffered a tragic setback with one soldier killed on site and Girardin later succumbing to his injuries after an emergency evacuation to France. President Macron conveyed the news on social media and expressed his condemnation of the attack.
In the wake of these events, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam declared an active investigation, promising to pursue justice. Despite Hezbollah's denial of involvement, the incident adds to the historical toll, as over 160 French soldiers have died in Lebanon since 1978 under similar circumstances.
