International Flight Blockade Highlights Tensions over Taiwan
China praised Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar for blocking Taiwan President Lai Ching-te's flight, emphasizing adherence to its one-China principle. Despite Taiwan's allegations of China's economic pressure, these countries' decisions align with China's policy. Lai was set to visit Eswatini for an anniversary, coinciding with China's new incentives for Taiwan.
China commended three nations on Wednesday for denying overflight permission to Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, emphasizing the importance of the one-China principle in international relations.
In Beijing, a spokesperson from China's Taiwan Affairs Office dismissed accusations of economic coercion, instead appreciating the nations for adhering to China's policy. Taiwan accused China of influencing Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar to block Lai's flight as he was set to visit Eswatini.
This move comes shortly after China introduced new incentives for Taiwan, following a meeting between Taiwan's opposition leader and President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
