MIVD Calls for European Security Responsibility Amid Global Tensions
The Dutch military intelligence agency MIVD urges Europe to take greater security responsibility due to pressures on Western alliances and China's support for Russia. The agency highlights threats from various global conflicts and increasing risks of Chinese cybersecurity attacks, advocating for Europe to be more self-reliant amid U.S. political unpredictability.
The Dutch military intelligence agency MIVD has called for Europe to assume greater responsibility for its security, citing pressure on long-standing Western alliances and China's support for Russia. This warning was issued by MIVD Director Peter Reesink as part of the agency's 2025 annual report release.
Reesink highlighted that the international system, traditionally dependent on institutions to uphold rules and agreements, is increasingly under duress. The agency points to spillover from conflicts like the U.S.-Venezuelan tensions and Middle Eastern frictions, which pose threats to Dutch interests. Heightened risks of Chinese cybersecurity attacks are also expected, according to MIVD.
The report surfaces amid strained relations between NATO and the Trump administration, with President Trump threatening to exit over alliance disagreements. Reesink emphasized the Netherlands' strong ties with the U.S. but underscored efforts to bolster European cooperation due to Washington's unpredictability. The conflict in Ukraine is noted as the largest threat to the Netherlands' security, intensified by collaborations among North Korea, China, Iran, and Russia.
