China’s Diplomatic Pressure: Taiwan’s Lai Ching-te Cancels Trip to Eswatini

Taiwan has scrapped President Lai Ching-te’s visit to Eswatini following intense diplomatic pressure from China. Three key African countries—Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar—revoked overflight permissions for Lai’s aircraft, allegedly at Beijing's behest.

Eswatini, one of the rare nations maintaining formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, was set to welcome Lai for the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III’s rule. However, in a surprising turn of events described as 'unprecedented' by Taiwan's Presidential Office Secretary-General Pan Meng-an, the flight clearances were revoked without notice.

While Madagascar cited its diplomatic stance recognizing 'one China' as rationale for its decision, neither Seychelles nor Mauritius have provided official reasons. This development highlights the complex dynamics and tensions in cross-strait relations, as China continues to exert its influence over Taiwan’s international engagements.
