Operation Earth Guard has brought to light widespread corruption and illegal soil mining in Kerala, involving 14 officials from various departments. A recent probe revealed these officials allegedly accepted bribes totaling Rs 4.69 lakh solely through UPI transactions, facilitating unlawful activities that have significant ecological consequences.
The investigation, executed under the aegis of the vigilance department, spanned across 14 district Mining and Geology offices, alongside local self-government institutions and numerous flagged locations. It uncovered serious infractions, including soil removal exceeding permitted limits and the misuse of building permits to conduct unauthorized excavation.
With the gravity of the situation escalating, state officials have been directed to initiate legal proceedings against those implicated, issuing warnings about the threat illegal mining poses to Kerala's ecological balance. Further investigations are underway, with vigilance authorities urging public cooperation in reporting corruption.
