In a significant move to bolster patient safety, the Keralam government has enacted a comprehensive surgical protocol to address rising incidents of surgical errors. This initiative, spearheaded by IAS officer Rajan Namdev Khobragade under the Governor's authority, aligns with World Health Organisation safety standards while integrating region-specific enhancements.

Despite Keralam's accolades for advancing surgical care access through technology, increasing concerns such as wrong-site surgeries and retained surgical items have led to calls for tighter regulatory oversight. As a result, all healthcare institutions, from primary health centers to tertiary hospitals, are now mandated to implement standardized safety protocols.

These protocols include the mandatory use of checklists at various stages, starting with identity verification and informed consent confirmation in the wards. Also, surgical sites must be clearly marked to prevent wrong-site surgeries. A robust three-stage verification process ensures correct patient identification and coordinated surgical teams, while structured training and audits aim to mitigate the root causes of surgical errors. Emphasizing a culture of safety, the protocol introduces non-punitive reporting and accountability, driving comprehensive reform across the state's healthcare system.
