The Supreme Court has directed a sessions court in Odisha to conclude the trial against Md Abdur Raheman within three months. Raheman, booked under the stringent UAPA in 2015, is accused of spreading anti-national ideology. Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi instructed the trial court to prioritize this case at least twice a week.
The decision came after Raheman's plea challenged a 2025 Orissa High Court order denying him bail. The petitioner, arrested in a separate UAPA case in December 2015 by Delhi Police, was convicted and jailed for over seven years. Despite completing his sentence, his bail request was opposed by the prosecution, citing the severity of allegations.
The Supreme Court's directive also emphasizes ensuring witness availability for proceedings. While the high court highlighted the gravity of charges against Raheman, the bench suggested he could approach them again if the trial isn't concluded within the given timeframe, reinforcing the need for swift justice.
