On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea by lawyer Nilesh Ojha challenging the contempt proceedings initiated against him by the Bombay High Court. The proceedings were triggered by Ojha's scandalous remarks targeting a judge during a press briefing on the Disha Salian case.
Ojha had made accusations of corruption against the high court judge overseeing the case, leading to the contempt charge. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta emphasized that any attempt to undermine or sensationalize judicial proceedings threatens the very foundation of the judicial system.
The apex court underscored the importance of judicial independence and warned against reckless allegations that could erode the public's trust in the justice delivery system. It stressed the importance for members of the legal profession to uphold ethical responsibilities and conduct.
