DRI Uncovers Major Smuggling Racket at Nhava Sheva Port
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has seized 132 containers valued at Rs 139 crore, uncovering a smuggling racket of restricted watermelon seeds and green peas at Nhava Sheva Port. The operation led to the arrest of the importing firm's proprietor, and investigations are ongoing.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has dismantled a significant smuggling operation at Nhava Sheva Port in Navi Mumbai, involving restricted imports of watermelon seeds and green peas. Officials seized 132 containers with commodities worth Rs 139 crore.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI Mumbai intercepted consignments of approximately 3,029 tonnes, falsely declared as 'Toor Dal/Pigeon Peas'. A detailed examination revealed 2,710 tons of watermelon seeds from Tanzania and Sudan, as well as 319 tons of green peas from Canada.
Both commodities have strict import restrictions to protect domestic farmers, with watermelon seeds restricted since June 2024 and green peas since December 2019. The importing firm's proprietor was arrested, and further investigations are in progress.
