Authorities in southern Nepal have intensified inspections on Indian-registered vehicles entering border towns following an increase in customs violations. Assistant Chief District Officer Hom Prasad Ghimire clarified that existing rules are being enforced more rigorously amid concerns over tax evasion and security threats posed by unauthorized vehicle entries.
In recent discussions with major political parties, including Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, officials stressed the need for improved management of foreign vehicle entries while ensuring convenience for local residents. Current regulations permit Indian vehicles to enter border areas for up to 24 hours without charges to facilitate cross-border movement and trade.
Officials emphasize that the tightened enforcement is not about restricting vehicle entries but ensuring compliance with customs regulations. The issue highlights broader implications for Nepal-India relations, with concerns over potential impacts on the social and cultural ties fostered by the open border.
