The Centre on Friday declared the start date for the transformative Women's Reservation Act 2023, introducing a 33% quota for women across legislative bodies and Union Territories, including Jammu and Kashmir.

The Ministry of Home Affairs outlined that the provisions of this act will be enforced from April 17, 2026, allowing for enhanced representation of women in legislative assemblies.

Initially passed in September 2023 under the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam,' the Act aligns with the government's commitment to gender parity, providing women with a third of the seats, which will become effective post the 2027 Census and delimitation exercise.
