UP Women's Commission Ready to Review Professor's Acquittal

In a recent development, Babita Singh Chauhan, chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Women Commission, stated the commission is open to revisiting the acquittal of a college professor accused of sexual exploitation, should any complainant come forward. Chauhan announced this after inaugurating an HPV vaccination initiative in Hathras.

The case traces back to an FIR filed in March 2025, following an anonymous complaint to high-level authorities, including the prime minister and chief minister. The allegations against the geography professor emerged from photographs purportedly showing inappropriate behavior with students. However, during the trial, there was a significant lack of testimonial support, leading to the professor's acquittal

The acquittal was passed by Additional District Judge Mahendra Kumar on March 24, citing insufficient evidence and absence of witness corroboration. It was noted that possible evidence fabrication could not be ruled out. Subsequently, the professor, who had initially absconded and later arrested in Prayagraj, was granted bail during the legal proceedings.
