AIMPLB Condemns Gujarat's Uniform Civil Code Bill as Unconstitutional

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) criticized the recently passed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill by the Gujarat Assembly, deeming it unconstitutional. They argue it imposes majoritarian social norms on minority communities, particularly Muslims, and plan to challenge the Bill in the Gujarat High Court.

The UCC Bill, passed after a lengthy debate, aims to enact a common legal framework governing marriage, divorce, and other personal matters. The Bill includes penalties for forced marriages and mandates registration of marriages and live-in relationships. The AIMPLB described it as legally untenable and a violation of religious freedoms.

S Q R Ilyas, AIMPLB spokesperson, highlighted the Bill's failure to align with the constitutional spirit and stated that it infringes upon fundamental rights. The Board has previously challenged similar laws in Uttarakhand and announced plans to contest the Gujarat Bill, pointing to potential political motivations.
