In a significant legislative development, indications suggest that the Indian government is preparing to introduce a bill aimed at increasing seats in the Lok Sabha to facilitate women's reservation in the legislature. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed to the Rajya Sabha that crucial legislative activities will soon unfold.
During the final day of the Budget session, Rijiju outlined plans for addressing two notable bills: the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill and the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, revealing that strategic talks with the Opposition are ongoing. The proposed legislation aims to increase Lok Sabha seats from 546 to 861 by delinking delimitation from the Census.
Amid political dynamics, Party leaders, including Congress's Jairam Ramesh and Mallikarjun Khare, express support for women's reservation but voice concerns about the government's motives. While some view the timing as politically charged before state elections, the government emphasizes its commitment to women's empowerment.
