Rahul Gandhi Vows to Repeal Controversial CAPF Leadership Bill

In a bold proclamation, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has vowed to scrap the CAPF Bill 2026 if the Congress Party is elected to power in the next general elections. The bill, aiming to reserve top positions in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) for IPS officers, has faced stiff opposition, with Gandhi criticizing its impact on promotion opportunities within the CAPF ranks.

Highlighting the issue, Gandhi cited the example of CRPF Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik, who sustained severe injuries in a 2023 IED blast but continues to face stagnant career prospects. According to Gandhi, this is indicative of broader systemic discrimination against CAPF personnel, who frequently operate in hostile environments to ensure national security.

During recent parliamentary proceedings, the Rajya Sabha passed the CAPF Bill amid opposition protests, who argue it counters a 2025 Supreme Court ruling advocating for decreased deputation in high-ranking CAPF positions. The law facilitates appointing IPS officers as Special Director General and Director General in CAPFs exclusively through deputation, a move Rahul Gandhi promises to overturn to honor those committed to defending the country.
