The Maharashtra government's flagship scheme, Ladki Bahin Yojana, has seen a significant decrease in beneficiary accounts, with nearly 68 lakh accounts closed as beneficiaries missed the mandatory e-KYC deadline. The current number of active accounts stands at around 1.75 crore.
Initially set to expire on March 31, the e-KYC deadline has now been extended to April 30, providing an opportunity for beneficiaries to fulfill the requirements. Officials noted that the number of closed accounts might change following this extension. The scheme, which supports women from economically weaker backgrounds with a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500, faced scrutiny after reports indicated ineligible participants, including government employees, received benefits.
The government disburses approximately Rs 3,700 crore monthly under this initiative. However, due to the reduced number of active accounts, changes in fund allocation are imminent, with the 2026-27 budget allocation standing at Rs 26,000 crore, down from Rs 36,000 crore in 2025-26.
