In a remarkable turn of events, tax collections in Maharashtra's Thane district witnessed a significant surge in the 2025-26 financial year. This impressive feat was achieved through aggressive recovery drives, the introduction of amnesty schemes, and a swift transition towards digital payments, according to local officials.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) reported a remarkable Rs 878.37 crore in collections, marking an increase from Rs 810 crore the previous year. Digital and online payment modes became the preferred choice, with 87.37 percent of taxpayers opting for these methods. The Majiwada-Manpada ward emerged as a key player, contributing Rs 236.51 crore.
Meanwhile, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) achieved its record-high tax collection of Rs 876 crore, thanks to the strategic use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based calling systems and data analysis to identify defaulters. The 'Abhay Yojana' amnesty scheme also proved its efficacy, yielding Rs 192.81 crore in March alone. Administrative transparency and tech-integration were credited by NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde for this success.
