Russia Warns Citizens: Avoid Travel to U.S. Extradition Treaty Nations
The Russian government has issued a travel advisory cautioning its citizens against visiting countries with U.S. extradition treaties. The advisory cites increased risks of extradition and imprisonment since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began. Countries like Britain, Switzerland, and many EU states are highlighted as potential risks for extradition.
On Wednesday, Russia's Foreign Ministry issued a stark travel warning, advising citizens against visiting any countries that have extradition treaties with the United States. The warning comes amid what the ministry describes as elevated risks posed by "Washington's punitive justice."
The advisory highlights the increased danger Russian citizens face of being handed over to U.S. authorities, especially since the Russia-Ukraine war commenced in 2022. It further alleges that U.S. intelligence might use misleading schemes to ensnare Russian nationals abroad. The advisory specifically cautions those who may face criminal prosecution by U.S. agencies or who are on U.S. sanctions lists.
Among the nations identified as high-risk for extradition are Britain, Switzerland, most EU countries, Canada, Australia, and several Asian and Latin American states. The warning also references past extraditions, including that of Viktor Bout, highlighting that more than 100 Russians have faced similar fates after his controversial arrest in Thailand in 2008.
