The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill (FCRA), 2026, has ignited significant political debate. The ruling BJP defends the bill as crucial for national security and ensuring transparency, sparking accusations from the opposition that it infringes on minority rights and restricts NGOs.
On Wednesday, despite being part of the official agenda, the bill was not discussed in the Lok Sabha. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju posited that legislative priorities, not politics, dictated this decision. He highlighted the immediate necessity of the Andhra Pradesh bill, which led to the FCRA amendment being postponed.
Opposition parties strongly criticized the bill, alleging government double standards and claiming it targets minority NGOs. Protests ensued in Parliament, causing adjournments. The opposition pledged continued resistance, asserting the bill undermines workers and marginalized communities, and calling it unconstitutional and unnecessarily stringent.
