In a key leadership transition within the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain today assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Southern Command, one of the Army's largest and most strategically significant formations. He succeeds Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, who has taken over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.

The appointment comes at a time when the Army is intensifying efforts to enhance operational preparedness, jointness, and technological capability across diverse theatres.

Four Decades of Distinguished Service

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Lt Gen Sandeep Jain was commissioned into the MAHAR Regiment in June 1988. With a career spanning nearly 38 years, he brings extensive operational and leadership experience across varied terrains and mission profiles.

His command experience includes:

  • Infantry Battalion in both semi-developed terrain and during deployment with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan

  • Infantry Brigade in a Strike Corps

  • Leadership of a Counter Insurgency Force

  • Command of a Pivot Corps in Northern Command

He has also been closely associated with high-intensity operational environments, including:

  • Participation in Operation Pawan

  • Service as a Military Observer with the UN Mission in Ethiopia

  • Multiple tenures in high-altitude areas, including the Line of Control (LoC)

  • Counter-insurgency operations in the North East

Lt Gen Jain currently serves as the Colonel of the MAHAR Regiment, reflecting his deep institutional connect with the infantry.

Strategic and Staff Expertise

Before taking over Southern Command, Lt Gen Jain served as the Chief of Staff at Headquarters Southern Command, where he played a crucial role in:

  • Capability development

  • Force restructuring initiatives

  • Enhancing overall operational preparedness

His academic credentials include prestigious military courses such as:

  • Higher Command Course, Army War College

  • National Defence Course, Kenya

In recognition of his exemplary service, he has been awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and the Sena Medal (SM).

Commanding a Diverse and Critical Theatre

Southern Command oversees a vast and strategically complex area, including:

  • Desert regions

  • Rann and Creek sectors

  • Extensive coastline and maritime zones

  • Island territories

  • Interior hinterland areas

Upon assuming command, Lt Gen Jain paid homage to fallen soldiers at the Southern Command War Memorial and received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at headquarters.

Vision: Jointness, Technology, and Indigenous Capability

Outlining his priorities, Lt Gen Jain emphasized a forward-looking approach centered on:

  • Operational readiness across all terrains

  • Strengthening jointness among the armed forces

  • Accelerating indigenous capability development

  • Promoting technology absorption under the JAI (Jointness, Automation, Innovation) framework

He directed all ranks to uphold high standards of professionalism, preparedness, and combat readiness, particularly in the context of evolving security challenges.

Strengthening India's Defence Posture

Lt Gen Jain's appointment is expected to further bolster the Army's focus on multi-domain operations, self-reliance in defence production, and modern warfare preparedness, especially in a command that spans both land and maritime interfaces.

As Southern Command continues to play a pivotal role in India's defence architecture, his leadership is likely to drive greater synergy between traditional military strengths and emerging technological capabilities.
