Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain officially took command as the new General Officer Commanding-in-Chief for Southern Command this Wednesday, a role previously held by Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, who is now the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.

Commissioned into the MAHAR Regiment in June 1988, Jain is a National Defence Academy alumnus who has enjoyed a stellar military career spanning nearly 40 years. Across diverse operational theaters, he has held numerous command and staff positions. Notable assignments include leading an Infantry Battalion in semideveloped terrains and within the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, besides commanding a Strike Corps Brigade and a Counter Insurgency Force in Northern Command.

Jain's resume is further bolstered by participation in Operation Pawan, roles as a UN Military Observer in Ethiopia, and various tenures in high-altitude and insurgency-prone regions. Before assuming his current position, he was Chief of Staff at Southern Command HQ, where he played a pivotal role in enhancing operational infrastructure and readiness capabilities.

In recognition of his exceptional service, Jain, who attended both the Army War College's Higher Command Course and Kenya's National Defense Course, has been awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Sena Medal. Upon taking command, Jain paid homage to fallen soldiers at the Southern Command War Memorial and received a Guard of Honour.

Outlined as his main priorities are operational preparedness across diverse environments, including deserts and coastal lines, while boosting indigenous capability development under the JAI framework. He urged personnel to maintain high standards of readiness and professionalism amidst evolving operational challenges.
