Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Crusade: High Stakes in the 'Midas' Case

Ukrainian anti-corruption detectives have detained a former energy minister in connection with a sprawling investigation dubbed the 'Midas' case, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) announced on Sunday. This investigation has triggered a political crisis, initially surfacing last November, revolving around a $100 million kickback scheme within the state atomic agency. The scandal has implicated several senior officials and business leaders, alongside a former associate of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

"Today, NABU detectives detained a former minister of energy while crossing the state border, as part of the 'Midas' case," stated NABU. "Current investigative actions are underway, in accordance with legal requirements." More details are expected, although the individual has not been publicly named yet by the agency.

The ongoing scandal has already led to the resignation of Ukraine's previous two energy ministers and President Zelenskiy's chief of staff. All involved parties deny any wrongdoing. Ukraine's heightened focus on corruption eradication coincides with its aspirations for European Union membership, which mandates tackling entrenched graft. Recently, authorities have also scrutinized lawmakers, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, and a former presidential adviser on related charges.
