In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has upheld the Calcutta High Court's directive to commence the MGNREGA program in West Bengal with a prospective start date of August 1, 2025. This verdict is viewed by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as a defeat for the Centre and a resounding victory for West Bengal's marginalized communities.
The Supreme Court dismissed the Centre's plea and allowed the program's implementation, stressing that the state's residents have faced undue political and economic deprivation. The TMC highlights this decision as vital for the approximately 2.58 crore job cardholders, who had been left in limbo due to alleged politically motivated hurdles set by the BJP.
West Bengal's Panchayat and Rural Development Minister, Pradip Mazumdar, noted that despite the Centre's obstruction, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee committed to funding the 100-day work scheme through state finances. The high court's ruling permits the Centre to continue investigating claims of irregularities while implementing necessary oversight to ensure the program's smooth operation.
