The Election Commission has announced the commencement of the second phase of a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 states and Union Territories, scheduled between November and February. The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, emphasized the importance of updating voter lists and addressing citizenship-related issues.
The revision will cover key regions such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh, with the aim of ensuring no eligible voter is omitted and no ineligible names are included. While this exercise will not initially involve Assam due to specific provisions under the Citizenship Act, separate revision orders are anticipated for the state.
This ninth SIR since Independence includes an enumeration phase starting on November 4, followed by the release of draft rolls on December 9 and final rolls on February 7. The operation highlights the Commission's commitment to maintaining up-to-date and accurate voter databases ahead of the upcoming elections in 2026.
