The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the second phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in 12 states and Union Territories, including Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, and Tamil Nadu. The final voter list will be published on February 7, 2026, as outlined by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The decision has ignited a political confrontation, with Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar dismissing the criticisms from opposition parties, claiming, "SIR will proceed as announced, despite objections, including those from Bengal." Meanwhile, Rajasthan's Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari supports the move, highlighting past voter registration errors under Congress rule.

However, DMK leader MK Stalin and Congress officials have raised alarms, criticizing the timing and methodology of the SIR, likening it to an effort to manipulate electoral rolls during election periods and monsoon season. As debates escalate, questions arise on transparency issues, especially concerning excluded voter demographics and pending revisions in Assam.
