Chhattisgarh HC Orders Compensation in Custodial Death Case

The Chhattisgarh High Court has mandated that the state government compensate the family of Durgendra Katholiya, amounting to Rs 5 lakh, after his death in police custody raised serious questions about constitutional governance.

Highlighting the broader implications of such incidents, the court remarked that custodial deaths severely undermine public trust in the criminal justice system, making it imperative for authorities to offer explanations for deaths occurring under their watch.

The ruling followed a petition from Katholiya's family, who were aggrieved by the lack of transparency and accountability. The petitioners called for a CBI investigation, arguing that the multiple injuries documented in the autopsy signified third-degree torture during police remand.
