Cameroon's Constitutional Council on Monday confirmed Paul Biya as the winner of the highly contentious presidential election, extending the rule of the world's oldest president. Biya's victory was accompanied by violent protests as opposition supporters decried the legitimacy of the results.
In the economic capital of Douala, clashes between protesters and security forces resulted in at least four fatalities and over 100 arrests. The protests reflected widespread dissatisfaction, particularly from the youth and opposition, over Biya's extended tenure and concerns of electoral manipulation.
The opposition, led by Issa Tchiroma Bakary, criticized the election process, alleging that Biya used governmental influence to secure his victory. Tensions had escalated prior to the election, with Cameroon's political landscape marked by division and unrest.
