At a recent Automotive Forum in New York City, Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) announced plans to introduce legislation that would ban the import of Chinese automobiles and auto components into the United States, a report by The Epoch Times revealed. Claiming national security concerns, Moreno expressed hopes that regions like Latin America, Mexico, Canada, and Europe would follow similar regulatory paths.

Europe has already begun imposing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, accusing them of market dumping. Contrarily, Canada has taken a more cooperative stance, having recently signed a trade agreement with China to import thousands of Chinese electric vehicles annually. However, automakers have cautioned that any comprehensive ban may affect current market vehicles, advocating for a realistic timeline to adapt to new regulations.

Following revelations of Chinese cyber intrusions into U.S. infrastructure, federal mandates now require automakers to ensure vehicle software is free from Chinese influence. Multiple industry groups, representing automakers and suppliers, recently appealed to President Trump to uphold stringent regulations, amid concerns of Chinese manufacturers potentially setting up operations in the U.S. to bypass these restrictions.
