Tarique Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), will be sworn in as Prime Minister today, heralding a new political era for Bangladesh. This momentous occasion follows BNP's sweeping victory in the February 12 general elections, ending a prolonged period of political instability.
The anticipated political transition is met with optimism, as voiced by the Convener of Jatiyo Chhatra Samaj, who expressed confidence in Rahman's administration. The student leader emphasized a move away from the politics post-2024's Sheikh Hasina ouster, noting the distinct shift towards democratic governance.
Rahman's rise to power, after ending his 17-year exile, was fueled by BNP's significant parliamentary win. Jamaat-e-Islami now stands as the main opposition. India's representation at the swearing-in ceremony by Speaker Om Birla denotes regional significance, although notable leaders like PM Modi will not attend.
The day commenced with oaths taken by parliament members, while procedural controversies emerged over a proposed constitutional reform council, highlighting divisions. BNP MPs rejected the separate oath, citing constitutional absence, contrasting opposition parties who complied, following a referendum directive.
Diplomatic activities persisted, with Pakistan's Minister for Planning visiting Dhaka, underscoring global attention on Bangladesh as it navigates this political turning point.
