In a significant political shift, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) took a commanding position in the country's political landscape as its newly elected lawmakers assumed office. Garnering 209 out of 297 seats, BNP has secured the majority, while its rival Jamaat-e-Islami claimed 68 seats.
The BNP's chairperson, Tarique Rahman, is poised to become the next Prime Minister, following a transition ceremony scheduled for later. The ceremony will see President Mohammad Shahabuddin officially inviting the majority party leader to form the government as per the constitutional process.
The elections coincided with a controversial constitutional reform referendum. While the referendum saw over 60 percent of voters supporting the reforms, BNP members have chosen not to partake in the second oath for the Constitution Reform Council, rejecting the proposed changes.
