The Delhi government is introducing a new Atal Canteen at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to better serve the needs of patients' attendants and visitors who spend extended hours at the hospital. This initiative comes as part of a larger plan to enhance meal accessibility throughout Delhi's healthcare facilities.
According to an official from the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, the construction of the Atal Canteen at AIIMS will cost approximately Rs 29.74 lakh and is expected to be completed within 45 days. Unlike the existing canteen model that operates with fixed meal slots, the new facility will be open from 10 am to 10 pm to provide continuous service.
Launched in honor of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Atal Canteen initiative offers affordable, nutritious meals at Rs 5 per plate, targeting economically weaker sections. The government has allocated Rs 104 crore for this scheme, which includes plans for 40 more canteens near government hospitals.
