The British government is urged to intervene in the food sector amid rising energy costs linked to the Iran conflict. Sainsbury’s CEO, Simon Roberts, emphasized the urgency of government aid to curb escalating grocery inflation driven by these price surges.
The UK, heavily affected by energy price hikes following U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran, sees Finance Minister Rachel Reeves focusing on cost management for consumers and businesses. With Sainsbury's holding a 15.6% market share behind Tesco, Roberts noted the necessity of governmental support previously extended to other energy-intensive sectors towards the entire food supply chain.
Roberts, addressing the media post Sainsbury's annual results, asserted that containing energy costs is crucial for maintaining affordable food prices. Official data indicates a 3.7% rise in UK food inflation as concerns mount, with trade bodies predicting further price hikes to nearly 10% by year-end.
